The Age of Empires Team stumbled upon this Age of Empires II live music remix by The KlingDing and we couldn’t help but reach out to them and learn more!
Watch The KlingDing’s creative take on the music of Age of Empires II and read our Q & A with the YouTubers below.
How many of you in the video are Age of Empires fans?
Everybody in The KlingDing played AoE. Since we had an additional cello and flute-player for the video that aren’t normally part of‚ The KlingDing’ it’s a good 3 out of 5… 🙂
How did you come up with this concept?
On our youtube-channel we always look for funny and creative ideas to make music. A main concept is to re-purpose unusual things as music instruments such as console-controllers or game-sounds. And of course the sounds from AoE are so unique, everybody can recognize them and they work perfectly in a musical context. So as soon as one of us mentioned the idea we knew this would be terrific.
How long did it take to make the remix?
The first step was to get the sound samples from the game and check out which ones could fit together in terms of keynotes and rhythm. That was about 1.5 months before the final video-shoot. We then started creating the composition in the studio and started rehearsing afterwards. Playing AoE as a musical instrument surely needs some practicing. 🙂
[You can see a video of the making-of-progress video below the Q & A.]Do you have a favorite Age of Empires game?
Since we’re all born around 1988, most of us played AoE2 in our teenage-years and when we dropped the video last week it came to light that nearly everybody in our circle of friends and acquaintances played it as well back in the days. We’re thinking about a huge AoE-LAN-Party now. 🙂
Anything else you’d like to share?
We got so much great feedback from AoE-Players all over the world. It’s great to have such a great community. Check out our videos and leave us a comment, we’re always curious for new ideas!
